    Interview with Laura

    International Business student year 3

What was the main reason why you chose International Business (IB) at Hogeschool Rotterdam/Rotterdam University of applied sciences?

The main reason why I chose International Business is because of the wide variety of languages. I lived in Berlin, Germany for a couple of years so it was the obvious choice to choose German as a language again. I liked that I could choose Upper Intermediate, where you not only learn grammar but also Business language. I know that this will help me forever. Furthermore, Rotterdam is known as the city of economics and business, so I liked being surrounded that with kind of energy and status.

How do you experience the quality of education at International Business?

I do think the quality is good at International Business. I hear all sorts of stories from other HBO/Universities about how teachers never respond, or that students cannot find anything online, however, I do believe International Business has everything very well organized. Even though the university is very large, I do feel like teachers look at you individually too, which I did not expect.

Can you tell us a little bit more about the support that you received from faculty and staff?

I receive a lot of support, both from faculty and staff. I do recommend always attending classes as that is the way to also connect with your teacher. Teachers are always willing to help if you as well put in the effort yourself. Also, if you have a problem mentally or physically. I felt very much at ease.

What do you like the most about studying International Business?

I like it that I am surrounded by international students from all over the world, and that I have enough group projects to get to know everyone and learn about everyone’s culture and background. What I like as well is that I also can do a lot outside the study to develop myself as a person. For example, students can join a sport club, a sorority, or a society club, or join the Public Relations Team, or join the Honors Program – everything is possible.  Furthermore, I like the opportunity to do an internship and go on exchange. I have enjoyed my internship at Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and I am now ready to start a pre-master program at a university of science, and after that I will write my thesis at Loyens & Loeff. I am grateful I get these opportunities.

Do you have any tips for future students who would like to study International Business?

Enjoy your time, and do not put too much pressure on yourself. These years are to figure out what you want to do, and it is okay to doubt. Meet new people and be open to new situations!

How does the study programme prepare you for your future career or further study?

The variety of subjects, ranging from languages, to a personal and professional development course, intercultural competences classes and critical thinking classes, and business classes.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I am in year 3 now and I am not sure what I want to do career wise. What I do know is that I will make choices where I am happy with what I am doing. This will probably be a job helping others.
