    Interview with Shane

    International Business student year 4

What was the main reason why you chose International Business (IB) at Hogeschool Rotterdam/Rotterdam University of applied sciences?

Compared to other schools in the Netherlands International Business offers a lot of language choices. I really wanted to study a language that was out of my comfort zone, which in my case was Chinese. International Business also has a lot of international students and all this together helps me with my English, and also with going through cultural boundaries and see things from different cultural lenses. During the study programme check interview I felt like ‘Yes, this makes sense’. I like the Dutch spirit, and Rotterdam is the perfect city. I will have opportunities to go abroad, and I can explore new things.

How do you experience the quality of education at International Business?

I would like to share something about the teachers. I think that we have really supportive teachers and they are all pretty well educated.  They really want to teach you something and share their experiences, so we, as students, will make something out of our lives.

What do you like the most about studying International Business?

The languages! The Chinese language teachers were actually from China or they had spent a significant amount of time in China.

Where did you go for your exchange and where did you go in internship?

For my Exchange I went to Shanghai. It was nice, but also expensive, but worth it. For my Internship I went to Dubai and worked in the Hilton. I learnt that the world of business is about being able to work in a team. So, the fact that we also learnt this within the study programme was very helpful.

What specialization did you follow from year 2 onwards?

Commerce Asia. We had to start our own company and that was a valuable lesson. I have become super resourceful, and it helps you to overcome future situations you end up in.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I do have the idea now to stay in the hospitality industry. I rolled into the hotel industry by accident in my year 2. First as a part-time job at Hilton Rotterdam and in year 3 for my internship at Hilton Dubai. I feel I will be at Hilton for very good while to come. To be honest, I would like to see myself growing in the hospitality industry even more. Maybe on vice president level in 10 years from now.
